Three years in the making, Hanson's third studio album "Underneath" finally sorts the men from the boys. Be it a blessing or a curse, the fraternal Tulsa trio seem to have endured in the public's collective-consciousness as the "look mum" munchkins responsible for 1997's contagious Jackson 5 flavoured chart smash "MMMbop". However, not only does Underneath find Hanson more mature and intuitive (they may be relative veterans but they're still only marginally older than Busted) but their craft--now much given to quoting from the back pages of classic Seventies rock from the Stones ("Dancin' In The Wind") to ELO, 10CC and the pomp pop frisson of Queen ("Believe")--appears to have evolved innately and without any of the unseemly haste evident in many boy bands who find themselves opportunistically shunted into the arms of older consumers by marketing extremists. Largely self-penned but with a brace of co-writes courtesy of Matthew Sweet and former New Radical Gregg Alexander, Underneath does suffer the odd beige moment but with quality songs like "Misery" ( Jayhawks gone bitter) or the magical hidden bonus track "Lulla Belle" ( Beach Boys meets Mercury Rev) this record is very much Hanson's high water-mark. --Kevin Maidment
