And while the reason for such conclusions is evident, Turn To Me is such an incredibly strong debut that they quickly become redundant. Bill Jones is not the new anybody, she is simply Bill Jones. Largely a collection of songs sung solo to her own piano, the album is a journey through English tradition with a twist. Like Rusby, Jones has the ability to make folk music sound definitely unfolky through her avoidance of many of the usual instrumental and vocal clichés. While her choice of material owes its source to the likes of Martin Carthy ("Long John Moore"), Maddy Prior & June Tabor ("Blood and Gold") and John Cameron ("Mist Covered Mountain"), she gives it her own clear identity. Recorded on a shoestring budget--all of which adds to its considerable charm--the record is filled out by delicate touches of strings and guitar from Saskia Tomkins and Simon Haworth respectively. Head and shoulders above many of the recent hapless major label attempts at traditional music, this is not only a victory of sorts but the start of something very special. --Phil Udell
