Trouble Is Real

The brief cover of The Byrds' classic "Hickory Wind"--from which the title comes--merges the previously-unconnected worlds of country rock and eerily processed atmospherics, last found on a Sigur Ros album, preceded by Spiritualized's beloved rock sound. This willingness to explore different avenues of music, would of course be only admirable, if they weren't coupled with some damn fine tunes. And there are plenty of them--just check out the raucously catchy "So Sweet" or the gentle "Behind The Frontlines". For anyone who thinks that David Gray is the cutting edge of singer-songwriter talent, be prepared to be amazed. Everyone else, simply enjoy.--Thom Allott
