Following on from their excellent debut album One Time Bells, French Kicks' latest The Trial of the Century may be able to capture hearts among those unfamiliar with their powerful, swoonsome pop confectionary. Energetic romanticism is the best description of their style, though it would be wrong to lump them in with new wave/ punk bands currently cropping up; the sound relies much more on the keyboard and piano to put their message across. Grandiose, but never too heavy, but not exactly light, the band ride on the throbbing bassline and joyous harmonies in "Oh Fine", disco-lite and piano arpeggios in "Following Waves", through to the 80s-sounding sequencers on the closing "Better Time", never letting up musically, or dulling their ideas. Singer Nick Stumpf also has the right kind of croon that adds to the band's widescreen, vivid songs, and adds a welcome depth of sincerity and appeal that will add appeal. This exciting sound palette- in some ways reminiscent of a non-electronic Postal Service- serves the band well in creating a set of songs that can either inflate with pure happiness or tug at the heart strings; either way, there is not a single bad song on here. --Thom Allott
