As a producer, songwriter, and label head, he helped launch the careers of Duane Eddy, Phil Spector, and Nancy Sinatra (and almost derailed Gram Parsons by forcing him to strip the vocals off the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo.) His songs placed wry, decadent lyrics atop attractive arrangements, and his baritone was deeper than Lake Erie. Hazlewood has frequently been covered by the alt-rock elite; Nick Cave, Neubauten, Knife in the Water, and Primal Scream have already recorded his songs. Hazlewood's strange little tunes, close cousins to those of Serge Gainsbourg and Scott Walker, invite interpretation, which Total Lee! delivers in spades. The standout track is British folk chanteuse Kathryn Williams's simple and pure "Easy & Me." But you've got to hear the Tindersticks' bleary take on "My Autumn's Done Come" and the Webb Brothers' positively uplifting "Some Velvet Morning." This might be the best tribute album since 1999's More Oar: A Tribute to Alexander "Skip" Spence --Mike McGonigal
