Anyone familiar with the work of Quix*o*tic's may not be surprised at the sound of Mira Billotte's voice with new band White Magic, but the rest of the world would be right to approach Through the Summer Door with curiosity--the six short songs appear to be a musical approximation of the band's moniker. With no real classic verse-chorus-verse structures to adhere to, the emphasis is on folkish piano pieces which are far more 'Wicker Man' than Fairport Convention. However, given some sympathetic plays, the initially off putting sound of minor key acoustics and Billotte's voice becomes palatable and haunting, especially in her wordless accompaniments. This works best on the rousing "The Gypsies Came Marching After", and the opening "One Ring". When the band tries for a real song--in this case "Plain Gold Ring"--the sound is no less spooky, as the jazz lilt intertwines with the voodoo undercurrent to produce something quite haunting. If there's one complaint it's that the trio format employed by the band doesn't do justice to the songs (indeed, only on "Apocalypse" is an electric guitar used), but for a unique sound recalling both PJ Harvey and Margaret Mary O'Hara, this is thoroughly recommended. --Thom Allott
