Though this Italian psychedelic-pop band perform live as a quintet, as a recording entity Jennifer Gentle is now a one-man show: Marco Fasolo (co-founder and drummer Alessio Gastaldello left after their 2005 album, Valende). However, quite apart from the earliest forays into this realm by the likes of Todd Rundgren, Emmit Rhodes, and Paul McCartney, Fasolo's result sounds genuinely like a two-guitars-bass-and-drums rock combo. He infuses his instrumental approaches with a broad enough range of ideas and timbres that anyone hearing this would have reason to be surprised that this is all the work of one person. His penchant for occasionally speeding up the vocals slightly (shades of Ween and Zappa) adds a decidedly studio-only aura to the proceedings. The music evokes a range of musical explorers, including his homeland's king of cinematic landscapes, Nino Rota. A darkness pervades some of the songs, but The Midnight Room maintains a sufficient enough air of mystery to remain inviting, yielding surprises over the course of dozens of listens. --David Greenberger
Album Description
Two years after the release of their critically acclaimed Sub Pop debut "Valende", the Italian psychedelic avant-pop explorers are back. Though the band is five members strong when they play live, it is now solely the project of founder and songwriter Marco Fasolo. This new record pulses with a nocturnal, feverish, hallucinatory emotional atmosphere, making for a truly unique aural experience. Two guitars, bass, and drums are enriched by swirling keyboard touches, creating an album that feels like music from some forgotten amusement park at midnight. Evoking bizarre, otherworldly images of gas-lit street corners, abandoned theaters, labyrinthine corridors, "The Midnight Room" marries the intensity of primitive rock 'n' roll with a renewed taste for a certain kind of typically Italian melody, albeit deconstructed, shattered, and broken into tiny little bits.
