One of the less-celebrated Fall LPs, Frenz is something of an oddity, bleaker in tone than the group's other late-Eighties albums, and in its way, still more ambitious. The album is split between old and new Fall styles: extended, convoluted texts and comic monologues ("Oswald Defence Lawyer", "Bremen Nacht" and "Athlete Cured") rub up against thumbnail sketches of impoverished domestic life. Smith's lyrics are pruned down to acute asides, low in the mix against Simon Rogers' eerie electronica.
