Ross Russell recorded Charlie Parker for the tiny Dial label between February 1946 and December 1947. It was a period that saw the altoist achieve the supreme heights of his art while his emotional health disintegrated--the recordings were interrupted when Parker was committed to a six-month stay in the California State Hospital at Camarillo. It's all here in this remarkable "portrait of the artist," from the brilliant multiple takes of "Ornithology" to the harrowing "Lover Man," from the jam-session version of "Yardbird Suite" to the ironic "Relaxin' at Camarillo." --Stuart Broo
