Description:
State Fair came at an important time in the Rodgers and Hammerstein partnership. They had recently had their first Broadway success with Oklahoma! and were preparing their second, Carousel. In 1945, 20th Century Fox mogul Daryl Zanuck slipped in and procured their services for a filmed musical adaptation of Philip Stong's wholesome, cosy tale of farming folk as they encounter the more cosmopolitan temptations of the fair. It would be the only score they produced specifically for the cinema.
