Description:
Award-winner Alvin Youngblood Hart's third album, Start With Your Soul, is something of a departure from the rootsy acoustic vibe of his first two. Under the watchful eye of revered producer Jim Dickinson (Big Star, Ry Cooder etc) Hart went to Memphis, unpacked his battered old Strat, plugged in and set to work in a power trio format. This is a bold move, especially considering that both previous outings scored Album Of The Year placings in several influential magazines, but Hart has the chops to pull it off with aplomb, eschewing the obvious Hendrix/Cream stylings and going instead for a sharp-edged contemporary take on Chicago
This is a bold move, especially considering that both previous outings scored Album Of The Year placings in several influential magazines, but Hart has the chops to pull it off with aplomb, eschewing the obvious Hendrix/Cream stylings and going instead for a sharp-edged contemporary take on Chicago blues, sometimes flavoured with Stax-y horns. Of his own songs, there's a haunted, mellow vibe to "Electric Eel", a funky groove to the instrumental "Porch Monkey's Theme" and a brief return to rootsy blues with "A Prophet's Mission" which, like much of his material, deals with the problems faced by American minorities. But Hart also uses this album to showcase some favourites from his record collection, ranging from Dave Dudley country songs to a lesser-known Chuck Berry gem and an unexpectedly excellent Black Oak Arkansas cover. --Johnny Black
