Taking his fascination with the feline species to the most esoteric nth degree, Canadian producer Aaron Funk steps into conceptual territory for his second full-length album, Songs About My Cats. Taking his fascination with the feline species to the most esoteric nth degree, Canadian producer Aaron Funk steps into conceptual territory for his second full-length album, Songs About My Cats. No problem on paper, but on repeated listens could it be one conceptual step too far? Well, to the kind of specialised market this album would appeal to (fans of other noise-manipulators like Speedranch Janksy Noise, Alec Empire and Christoph De Babalon) probably not. But to the rest of listening public the answer has to be a resounding yes. Why you ask? Well because far from being a melodic stroll in the park Songs About My Cats is more a disorientating sprint down crack alley, a digital beatdown; typified by randomised, rapid-fire beats, frenetic digital manipulation and mind-numbing twisted audio. Take the sinister tones of "For Bertha Rand" and the unremitting crash and clatter of "Poor Kakarookee", both of which it would seem verge on the side of experimentalism for experimentalism's sake; absent of melody and recognisable structure, no bad thing of course, but when the same themes are spread over 14 tracks audio patience can run a little thin. Redeeming itself in the latter parts with the haunting Howard Riley style piano work of "Katzescorge" and the free-falling sax jazz of "Pouncelcot", things brighten up somewhat, but in the main this still remains an album for the hardcore only. --Found Sounds
