Although associated them with the new British rock scene, the half-Welsh half-Australian Million Dead prove a spikier and more fascinating proposition than that with their debut A Song to Ruin. Taking their name from a song by Refused, they stay true to the punky ambitions of Fugazi and, in their uncompromising barrage of noise and ideas, conjure the spirits of earlier refuseniks such as Zounds and Subhumans. But this isn't just angry riffs and hectoring voices. Rather, each song (bar the droning, enormously intense title track) veers purposefully away from traditional rock structures, guitar, bass and drums providing a violently churning backdrop for Frank Turner's howls of protest. And herein lies the band's importance. Though they dislike being labelled a "political" band, Million Dead--well-read and openly erudite--stand out for their belligerent questioning. Kicking against corporate imperialism and the death of imagination, Turner, his voice often as desolate as the Cure's Robert Smith's, races us across the globe, into classical mythology and back through time, seeking a remedy for a society he clearly believes to be corrupt and decadent. It's a wild trip, closer "The Rise and Fall" being particularly savage, but it's hugely gratifying to be challenged on so many levels. --Dominic Wills
