Somewhere Deep in the Night

For sheer cinematic pizzazz it's hard to beat the percolating title track as Swing Out Sister take us on a midnight spin through Monte Carlo. Indeed, there's a tangible air of Continental cool throughout--think La Dolce Vita, Jean Seberg, Alain Delon, Brigitte Bardot.

Other high spots include kaleidoscopic opener "Through the Sky" with its spiralling Fifth Dimension choral arrangement hinting at Jimmy Webb's "Up, Up and Away" and the dramatic Dusty-esque "Where Do I Go?". They may not be fashionably hip, but Somewhere Deep in the Night is a mod, jazz, loungecore classic. --Chris King
