Don't be fooled by Kristian Leontiou's picture on the cover of Some Day Soon. In spite of appearances, the music on this 22-year-old singer-songwriter's debut album is geared more towards the coffee table than the skate park. No surprise then that he was discovered by the same label as Dido--his sound is not a million miles away from hers, with layers of electronic beats and synths underlaying his hearfelt and earnest lyrics, sung in a breathy, R&B whine. This is hardly the stuff expected of such a young man, so it's perhaps fortunate that he's aiming above his demographic (why else would someone, at the tender age of 22, title a song "The Story of My Life"?). Some Day Soon's mood is sombre and melancholy, reflected in song titles such as "It's OK" and "The Crying" and lyrics like "Show me where the answers live / Show me where the truth forgives" ("Some Say"). Too often, his songs lack any bite, and it can all sound a bit immature or self-indulgent. Generally, though, Some Day Soon is a competent debut, and shows off this young North Londoner's potential as both a singer and a songwriter. --Ted Kord
