Digitonal is a duo who have made a classic of ambient chamber music with their CD, Save Your Light for Darker Days. Digitonal is a duo who have made a classic of ambient chamber music with their CD, Save Your Light for Darker Days. As Digitonal, English electronic musician and clarinetist Andy Dobson and Saudi Arabian violinist Samy Bishai find a meeting ground between chilled electronic grooves and the modern classicism of Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt. Serene and searing, their mix of acoustic instruments and electronics is seamless. Although Dobson is primarily an electronic musician, he's also a classically trained, albeit somewhat lapsed clarinetist. He takes an instrument that's unique in electronica, and blows a solo on "93 Years On" that materializes in a fog-shrouded landscape before turning into a blistering cry of luxurious anguish. Bishai is a demon violinist who plays sessions non-stop from Tom Jones to Seckou Keita. Whether he's overdubbed a dozen times or bowing solo, his detailed articulations bring out the emotions in Dobson’s electronic arrangements. On "Silver Poetry," he unfolds a quietly rhapsodic refrain across Dobson's syncopated grooves. Many of the titles have a sense of yearning, loss and nostalgia, balancing classical elegance with glitch-strewn, Blade Runner moods. Digitonal call their music "cinematic electronica," and while they do have a widescreen sense of scope, the music is ultimately about intimate, often wistful moods. -- John Diliberto
