Mari Tsuda, an artist previously unknown to me, is an excellent Satie player. It seems to me that the Japanese style in the arts is very sympathetic to the withdrawn nature of Satie's music. Tsuda just sets the music out plain and lets it bring its smile or tear without affectation. Unfortunately, either the pianist or her producer has chosen to separate some of Satie's sets of pieces, like the famous Gymnopédies and the hilarious Desiccated Embryos (all-out musical parody), with other irrelevant pieces. Why make me bust my fingers programming my CD player if I want them together? --Leslie Gerber
