While working on some sonic constructions that were to become the bases of several of the songs that ended on the record, Mingus decided, somewhat hazardously, to use his voice as yet another matter, not knowing that it would eventually and dramatically modify his creative agenda. Here you go: Sada Soul is My Jazzy Child's very first collection of songs. Literally unleashing a world of influences (Moondog, This Heat, Robert Wyatt, Mahmoud Ahmed) and a stubborn musical singularity, Damien's music, impregnated with the libertaire spirit of the experimental folk, pop and jazz of, say, the 1970s, is not pop music per se. It was composed with a guitar, a cappella or with a toy xylophone, sequenced on a computer, and beautifully and ceaselessly oscillates both between the fixed squaring of loops and repetition and the unhinged flux of live recorded experimentation, and between the melodic constraints of eternal pop and folk music (the Beach Boys, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks) and the aesthetic and structural freedom of great experimental music (from drone obsessives and electronics to noise and free improvisation).
