It is incredible that Thin White Rope never even reached a level of consensual adoration among the alternative rock fraternity. They had everything: a singer (Guy Kyser) possessed of a glowering stage presence and a voice like Tom Waits gargling gravel; a guitarist (Roger Kunkel) who played with a gleeful malevolence only matched by The Pixies' Joey Santiago; and several albums' worth of great songs. It may have been that Thin White Rope were a few years ahead of their time--their country leanings predated the alt country crew by some distance, and there are certainly echoes of Thin White Rope's diseased boogie in Uncle Tupelo,
