Keith, a quartet of musicians from different parts of the UK, came together during their studies in Manchester. Given their wide range of individual influences, the band have always been hard to pin down to one sound, one minute coming out with Smiths-like songs such as "Back There", another covering Sebastien Teller's mellow masterpiece "La Ritournelle". Their debut album, Red Thread, started life an EP; finding they couldn't agree which tracks to put out next, they kept recording more until an albums-worth was suddenly finished. Subsequently the album ticks many different musical boxes and has a slightly rambling feel, but doesn't sound too willfully eclectic. Drawing on krautrock, jazz, afrobeat, indie and psychedelia, the band seem genuinely in thrall to a myriad of sounds and styles and - even better - are able to meld them into a series of workable pop songs. From the twisted disco of Mona Lisa's Child's to the ambient textures of `The Miller', it's a roller coaster of an album that won't fail to hit the spot at least a few times on its travels. --Paul Sullivan
