Northeastern Brazil offers some modern sounds, taking batucada instruments such as surdu and bells and letting them dance in a rock-tinged environment. The sound of the berimbau gives way to hard-edged electric guitar and phat bass. Named after the independent nation set up in the wilderness by Africans who escaped from slavery in Brazil, Nagco Zumbi evokes that independent spirit with Eddie Hazel-like guitars, Afrika Bambaataa vocal samples and a Kid Rock vocal attack. --Sule Greg Wilson
