The Python troupe is in fine form on this disc, recorded in 1972, before the TV series ground them all down a bit and the movies really took hold of their attention. Every sketch on Previous Record is splendidly well-written, particularly Eric Idle's "Wine List" and "The 1972 Eclipse of the Sun"--but so much care is taken throughout, it's almost misleading to pick out just a few. A lot of the material on Previous Record consists of sound-only versions of sketches from the TV show. Some of these work better than others--the worst can be a bit static--but it's impossible to avoid "seeing" John Cleese
