Long before releasing this, his debut solo album, Falkner had established his pop credentials as guitarist with briefly fashionable San Francisco-based ironists Jellyfish. He brought a similar musical sensibility to Author Unknown--a roughly even balance of 1980s American New Wave and 1960s British pop--but dispensed with the spangled flares and silly hats. This modesty is at once this record's greatest strength and greatest weakness.
