The name might suggest the fire-and-brimstone righteousness of the Old Testament, but Abraham--the nom de plume of Sussex-born club chanteuse Rachel Cuming--prefers the slow-burning flicker of a candle to a fully-fledged Biblical conflagration. A few years ago, and this would have been called trip-hop, but On The Surface--a compilation of Abraham's first three vinyl-only EPs--thankfully recalls much more the discordant, clanking beats and thick, soupy funk employed by Ruby or Tricky, rather than any bland coffee-table concern.
