On Returning is a 31-track compilation drawn from the three albums (Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, 154) that Wire recorded for EMI in the late 1970s. Though it can certainly be argued that their best work was another decade away, in the shape of the sublime singles "Kidney Bingos" and "Eardrum Buzz", it is the songs collected here for which Wire will be remembered. Though a lot of this stuff now sounds as slapdash and amateurish as it doubtless was, their influence is extraordinarily pervasive. One song here ("Strange") was covered by REM, another ("Outdoor Miner") by Lush and two others ("Three Girl Rhumba", "I Am The Fly") were very liberally borrowed from by Elastica as the basis for their two best singles (respectively, "Connection" and "Line Up"). Wire were the logical end of punk's attempt to reduce rock & roll to its fundamentals. There are no luxuries here: every one of these terse, abrupt songs is shorn of extraneous instrumentation and arrangement (and, it must be said far too often, tunes). These recordings are probably best thought of as something to be learned from rather than enjoyed, but are nonetheless worth having for that. --Andrew Mueller
