Old Codes, New Chaos is the debut LP from Hull-based groovers Fila Brazillia. The duo released their debut single "Mermaids" in 1990, but waited four years to put out this long player, which is based around a collection of their previously released singles and a smattering of new material. Though the duo became known after this for their erudite genre-blending, Old Codes... shows how much of a house bias they had when they started out. Lush, four to the floor electronica is casually joined together by intriguing recorded dialogue, which covers everything from economic recessions ("Whose Money") to secret government LSD tests ("Serratia Marcescens"), all sandwiched between the Brazilian speeches that begin and finish the album. An overt Chicago/Detroit feel can be heard throughout the tracks here, albeit with a modern Fila twist. Aside from their take on the house vibe, there's also gorgeous up tempo break beat on "The Sheriff", groovalicious hip hop flava on Fila Funk and abstract behaviour on Strange Thoughts. A typically varicoloured outing from Hull's most prominent beatsmiths.--Paul Sullivan
