More than a year before Pulp successfully adopted the class struggle as the backdrop for the monstrously successful Different Class album, Haines surveyed the trenches from a more or less neutral redoubt of disaffected middle-class rootlessness and, characteristically, decided that opening up on everybody was preferable to taking sides. Now I'm A Cowboy is a fine record, bristling with literate umbrage and riddled with great tunes. The centrepiece is "The Upper Classes", a lengthy invective which stands comparison with Bob Dylan's "Idiot Wind". Haines' indictment of class tourists continues on "Chinese Bakery"--a brutally funny sketch of a trust-funded bohemian not dissimilar to the one later depicted in Pulp's "Common People"--"I'm A Rich Man's Toy" and "Underground Movies". The latter is gleefully damning: "I lived in a flat without water running/Thought it was smart ... thought it was funny". Possibly best of all was "New French Girlfriend" ("I want a girl to hold my hand when the plane lands"), which Haines has always claimed was conceived as a duet with Vanessa Paradis, but who, oddly, never quite got around to recording her part. --Andrew Mueller
