"They tried to kill us off, but this show's not over" sings Rialto's lush night owl Louis Eliot on Night On Earth's highlight, the wonderful, Bowie-like torch-song smooch of "Anything Could Happen". Too true. Hapless chaps that they are, cinematic-pop combo Rialto have been dropped by the same unsympathetic record label on two separate occasions and therefore have never had to contend with such sumptuous inconveniences as worrying where to park the limo or being chased by the paparazzi. It's a good thing, presumably, that Simon Le Bon's flashbulb-illuminated world of catwalk arm candy and yachting off the coast at St Tropez isn't necessarily one of the band's aspirations. Even so, the up-market influence of vintage Duran Duran looms deliciously large on the band's second full-length album, with the likes of "Deep Space", "Anyone Out There" and "London Crawling" each evoking the pouting, puffed-up pop of that combos' glorious early 1980s period. But Rialto are very much Rialto--part Bond theme, part trashed-up glam-rock a la Suede or Jake Shillingford's My Life Story. Night On Earth is a fabulous record, one which ought to have been made by somebody called Walker or Gainsbourg--and one which suggests that, in letting them go, their previous employers must have taken leave of either their senses or their ears. But like they say, on "Anything Might Happen" (again), "It's nowhere near the final curtain". Third time lucky, perhaps. --Kevin Maidment
