Much More than Much Love is only Finley Quaye's third album in seven years. When Finley Quaye first burst onto the scene in 1997 with the happy-go-lucky debut Maverick A Strike, he was an irresistible proposition. His distinctively reggaefied vocals, idiosyncratic "nonsense" words and insouciant, pseudo-spiritual vibe made the album the ultimate soundtrack for a long, hot summer. Quaye's second album, Vanguard, fared less well, and so this third long player was bound to be hailed as a return to form. The collaborative single "Dice" (featuring William Orbit and Beth Orton--the first release from the album) bodes well. It's original, well crafted, introspective and poignant. The folkish elements of the song (but not the electronic ones) become a gentle, persistent leitmotif throughout the rest of the album which fuses Quaye's sweet reggae sounds with refined diversions into rock and country. It all makes for an interesting and still distinctive sound, but there is now a commercial edge and maturity at play that were joyously absent on his debut. A return to form perhaps, and certainly a more sophisticated album, but Much More than Much Love doesn't come close to his good old renegade days, which sadly now seem lost forever. --Paul Sullivan
