In many respects, Mountains will come as a shock to those who remember Mary Timony as the incendiary guitarist and vocalist of Helium, and particularly those who recall her pictured on the inside sleeve of their The Dirt Of Luck album, with the word "Bitch" scrawled on her forehead. Mountains, aside from the contributions of co-producer Christina Files and the very occasional guest on euphonium and vibes, is very much a solo project, and sees Timony's venomous disgust turned to troubled, violent but eventually life-affirming poetry. Over simple, repeating guitar, strings and piano, sometimes recalling mediaeval folk and often intensely beautiful, she recounts her pained and confessional tales of just barely coping. Lyrically, Timony is gripped by the tragedy of human existence. Concerning herself with love and blood, near-extinguished hopes, insanity and self-destruction, she unashamedly deals in updated gothic high romance--evidently influenced by bad times, Percy Shelley and, maybe more importantly, his wife Mary. This is a courageous effort of massive conviction. --Dominic Wills
