Mix one part Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, a dash of Tom Petty, and add a little Sam Roberts to get just a sense of what Matt Mays & El Torpedo have to bring to your ears. Countryfied rock straight outta Nova Scotia, the group¹s sound is both timeless and, to a certain degree, timely as well. With the success of Sarah Harmer, Ron Sexsmith and the aforementioned Roberts, acoustic guitars, warm vocals and strong south-inflected melodies still hold a high place on the Canadian charts. There are many solid, driving-down-the-dusty-road-in-an-old-convertible tracks on this disc; producer Don Smith (Tom Petty, U2, Bob Dylan) knows how to give the band an open field and the space to cruise through it. The track "What Are We Gonna Do Come the Month of September" is a perfect example with its wonderfully expansive Hammond organ-infused groove. The seven-minute-plus track, peaking with a two minute, perfectly languid exit, allows the players their chance to express a mood, and the audience their chance to feel it, without being rushed by the confines of pop's three-minute radio rule. Toronto's Now Magazine recently named Mays "Canada's most promising roots rock tunesmith," admittedly, the amazingly-talented Kathleen Edwards is also very deserving of that title, but as symmetry would have it, she joins Mays as co-vocalist on "The Plan", adding extra oomph to a track that deserves to be an outside-the-box radio hit this summertime. --Denise Sheppard
