Bearing proud the scars and wisdom of a life spent living, Patrick Park's full length debut Loneliness Knows My Name is the album every would-be troubadour sets out to make. As romantic, vibrant and freewheeling as Ryan Adams and Elliott Smith at their best, with the longing of every deadbeat cowboy who ever put a lump in the throat, the Colorado singer-songwriter corrals a vivid cast of world-weary characters who live out their battered lives to dirt track country and blues scorched rock. Most of his beleaguered souls are either beyond help or, like him, fundamentally flawed--over the wistful pedal steel of "Something Pret
Most of his beleaguered souls are either beyond help or, like him, fundamentally flawed--over the wistful pedal steel of "Something Pretty" he laments "I'm the friend you need, but can't be trusted". But Park isn't one to be miserable. Aided by Wilco producer Dave Trumfio, he imbues his sweetly poignant plods with an unswerving sense of optimism; "Sons of Guns" exemplifies his good will out philosophy as doomed picking and sinister slides give way to a spirit-rallying anthem. But it's his lyrical poignancy that makes Loneliness Knows My Name exceptional, confirming him as a young Bruce Springsteen or Glen Campbell. "Your Smile's a Drug", "Silver Girl" and "Past Poisons" showcase an acute understanding of the human condition, and an ability to sum it up in two lines. While the claim in "Thunderbolt" that "it gets so hard to keep out the cold, when you're living in a house full of holes" probably isn't one that the majority of people could vouch for, the feeling of helplessness is universal. --Dan Gennoe
