Recorded as a celebratory homecoming in a cramped Los Angeles venue at the end of the band's 1999 tour, Live At The Key Club is the first officially recorded document of the semi-legendary Pennywise making a typically sweat-drenched live appearance. More so than even self-confessed punk-sell-outs Green Day or Offspring, Pennywise are an example of modern punk's slightly depressing depoliticised ethos; there's barely time to think, let alone sloganeer between the jet-powered riffs of Pennywise's furious skater-punk anthemics. Which rather makes this the musical equivalent of naked bungee jumping or waterfall rafting; the likes of "Fight Till You Die" and "Final Chapter" neatly replace the stoic overtones of hardcore with the more familiar sight of a Blink 182-weaned fratboy moshpit. All fine, unpretentious fun--although on the downside, it does make the cover of the fiercely political Minor Threat's "Minor Threat" seem a little tacky. Forget that, though, and let yourself be swept along in the closing "Bro Hymn"--dedicated to Pennywise founder Jason Thirsk, who died in 1996 after a battle against spiralling alcoholism. It's a reminder that punk-rock doesn't have to be a political rally to make an emotional impact; Live At The Key Club hits all the right buttons, and it hits 'em hard. -- Louis Pattison
