He surrounds himself with a roster of first-class musicians, with arrangements that vary from sparse, minimal guitar and voice to swelling string and horn sections. Co-producer John Leventhal contributes the lion's share of accompaniment, with, among other things, keyboards, mandolin, percussion, and, most notably, tasteful, sensitive electric guitar playing.
As always, Wainwright shines on the ballads--his quirky voice and gentle charm are best when laid out plain, andare perfectly complemented by his simple, confident guitar work. "OGM" deconstructs the modern ritual of the answering machine, injecting a tender melody and delicate fingerpickedinstrumentation with Wainwright's keen eye for observation and inspiring gift for sentimentality. "So Damn Happy" addresses the paradox of a breakup while also taking a wry, self-deprecating look at his own ultra-sensitive style ("Dear listener would you like to slap me?"). It is precisely this gift for identifying his own weaknesses that proves to be Wainwright's greatest strength.
