On the contrary, in fact, because where occasionally this band have been all too keen to show a difficult edge--see the passages of Tibetan mysticism and oriental instrumentation on 1998's out-there Head Trip in Every Key--Last Call
finds them in vibrant, rocky mood. Frontman John Davis's raggedly beautiful vocals and bittersweet lyrical edge--often compared to Big Star's Alex Chilton--is the immediate touchstone here: his emotive rasp is the gunpowder in the explosive kick of tracks like "So Insincere" and "The Staggering Genius". Bassist Sam Powers does a fine back up job, however, penning a handful of songs that compliment each other in a manner that recalls the working relationship of Lou Barlow and Jason Lowenstein of Sebadoh. The past has been rocky for Superdrag--they've been misunderstood by their record labels, underrated by the press, and sometimes appeared on the verge of internal collapse--but Last Call for Vitriol sounds like a band that's finally found its feet. It's about time. --Louis Pattison
