In the 1920s, Fletcher Henderson and his sidekick Don Redman worked out a style of writing that led directly into the swing era. Henderson's charts for Benny Goodman set the formula for all big band music until the end of World War II. The call-and-response between the brass and saxophones that he evolved may creak a little, but it's still often heard in the jazz of today. The best versions of Henderson's arrangements are arguably by his own band.
