If Ryan Adams is today's most prolific songwriter, the distinction of most consistent arguably has to go to Tim Kasher. As the main force behind the angular post-rock band Cursive and experimental indie outfit The Good Life, Kasher has penned some of the underground's most memorable and innovative tracks--and The Good Life's fourth full-length album, Help Wanted Nights, is no exception. While the album explores Kasher's familiar themes of small-town depravity and crumbling relationships, like his literary hero Charles Bukowski, Kasher finds new ways to tell the same old story--and he thankfully manages to keep things varied whe

While the album explores Kasher's familiar themes of small-town depravity and crumbling relationships, like his literary hero Charles Bukowski, Kasher finds new ways to tell the same old story--and he thankfully manages to keep things varied when it comes to the music. For example, "Little Bit More" sports acoustic guitars and twangy Telecasters; "Playing Dumb" juxtaposes bleak lyricism with surprisingly upbeat music; and the ten-minute closer "Rest Your Head" shuffles through verses like a lovelorn version of Bob Dylan's "Masters of War" without becoming tedious or overly repetitive. --Jeff Chandler
Album Description
The songs on the band's fourth and finest LP were initially meant as the soundtrack to a screenplay that Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar, member of Cursive) started writing in 2006. These songs seemed to describe moments of raw emotion more than chronicle a linear tale, so the group kept them as close to their original incarnations as possible, recording them true to form. The results are more stripped down and threadbare than previous Good Life creations. Yet the songs are also quite expansive, digging into deep emotional territory through narrative and melody. Achingly beautiful and sharply astute, "Help Wanted Nights" details human nature in the most honest way possible - taking risks without regret.
