As members of the more marginalized of the estimated 49 different Laotian ethnic groups, the Harak, Brao, Heuny, and Nkriang musicians heard on Ethnic Minority Music of Southern Laos (Sublime Frequencies, 2007) appear to exist near the bottom of the global socioeconomic hierarchy, for (according to information posted online by the CIA) Laos is considered one of the world's least "developed" countries. The traditional music of Southern Laos is astonishingly beautiful and peculiarly moving. The opening track, simply called "Molam," has something in common with the now-famously aligned Senegalese work song and Afro-American field holler; the Laotian, the African, and the African-American share an intimate melancholic immediacy which speaks of realities that all members of the species Homo sapiens must confront. The 17 examples in this extraordinary collection were recorded on location by ethnomusicologist Laurent Jeaanneau in the three southernmost provinces of Laos: Xekong, to the south and west of Hue, Vietnam; Attapu, bordering both Vietnam and Cambodia; and Champasak, a southwestern region that leads to both Cambodia and Thailand, and through which flows the mighty Mekong. The instruments used during these fascinating performances include the bamboo mouth organ known as the khaen; the Asian lutes bearing the names soong and phin; a bowed fiddle called a sor and numerous gongs, drums, and finger cymbals, accompanying those unforgettable voices that speak and sing in the tongues and tonalities of Southern Laos.
