The second album from this San Franciscan-based drums and bass and decks 3-piece follows the deranged hip-hop schematic set out by their debut, Monostereois. Working with a limited palette allows for endlessly inventive permutations of cross-fading, strings and skins. To that end, "Lesson 7" boldly follows in the footsteps of hip-hop classics from Double Dee & Steinski (Lessons 1-3), DJ Shadow ("Lesson 4"), and Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist ("Lesson 6"). Wah-wah double bass, kettle drums and heavy metal scratch theatrics prefigure in this new school of higher learning. "2AM" is a tour de force of tumbling, phased drum and bass rhythms and hearing-impaired electronic screeching kept in check by the solid pluck of the double bass. "Luck Hullabagunshot" takes its title from a literal translation of the sound of the spliced samples that open the track, which continues like the prelude to a Dario Argento splatterfest with tribal drums and the sustained screams of a plucked guitar. Genetically-spliced, diced, mixed and EQed, Elefish Jellyphant is peculiar animal. --Chris Campion
