The Go-Go Train spotlights 30 sharply tailored examples of the "true" mod sound. While the Who and Small Faces found favour with certain sections of the 60s mod fraternity, the hipper "ace faces" were drawn to the smoky subterranean beat cellars of London's Soho. It was here that a vibrant, underground jazz/R&B scene was spawned, with the likes of US jazzers Jimmy McGriff, Mose Allison and Ray Charles as its inspiration. Most of the cuts on Go-Go Train are highly sought-after rarities and would set you back a hefty whack on original 45; the most expensive being David Bowie's jazzy "Good Morning Girl&
Most of the cuts on Go-Go Train are highly sought-after rarities and would set you back a hefty whack on original 45; the most expensive being David Bowie's jazzy "Good Morning Girl", originally released on Pye in 1966. Less celebrated is Mike Stevens and the Shevelles' Hammond-stoked "Go-Go Train". An adaptation of a US R&B tune, the roll call of artists reads like a virtual who's who of swinging London's movers and groovers. Eric Burdon, Rod Stewart, John Mayall and the scene's "main man" Georgie Fame are all namechecked. Georgie may be absent here but his influence, especially his kitten-on-the-keys Hammond playing, is audible throughout. The Riot Squad's nonchalantly sophisticated "I Wanna Talk About My Baby" skilfully shanghai's Fame's velvety smooth modus operandi, while the Organisers come over all Jimmy Smith on the jazz grooved "The Organiser". Climb on board. --Chris King
