Proper continue to churn out excellent 4CD sets of key 1940s jazz and popular musicians, and the Dizzy Gillespie Story is one of their best efforts. One of the main reasons is that Gillespie recorded quite prolifically during the period covered (from his sideman days in 1937 to major stardom in 1950) but spread his talents across a great many labels, making it impossible for a single label from those times to issue a comprehensive documentation of his achievements. Thanks to the expiry of copyright and the diligent research of Proper's compilers, this set, although not complete, covers the major events in Gillespie's early recorded career. His work with the Teddy Hill, Cab Calloway and Lucky Millinder big bands can all be examined here, as can studio sideman stints with Lionel Hampton and Coleman Hawkins, tracing the development of his supremely individualistic style. The last part of disc 1 and all of disc 2 deal with the explosion of be-bop and Dizzy's part in it during the years 1945-46, ending with the powerful and exciting big band charts of summer and autumn 1946. Disc 3 completes this tour of the band, moving into the RCA Victor contract period of mid-1947 and beyond, while disc 4 rounds up the Victor period, takes a look at the brief Capitol period in 1950 and squeezes in the master takes from the Gillespie-Parker-Monk reunion made for Norman Granz in June that same year. There's serious creative matter among all the clowning, making this essential material for all who want an accurate picture of what really went down in the bebop years. --Keith Shadwick
