Description:
Seemingly written out of history by the Britpop revivalists, it's easy to forget that the self-same assets that The Arctic Monkeys have been feted for (urban realism and despair, the less-than romantic fumblings of young adulthood, drugs, Sheffield accents) have been peddled for at least a decade before by Jarvis Cocker. And this, at the height of Britpop's popularity, could count as their crowning achievement. The original Different Class is chock-full of their best known singles (including "Common People"), and a raft of absolutely indispensable album tracks. Now, a whole new audience can marvel at the vindictive "I Spy", the barely restrained sexual monologue in "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.", or the comedown of "Monday Morning". As a bonus, the mouth-watering bonus disc including the attendant B-sides such as the superb "Ansaphone", and sundry outtakes- including the legendary good-as-you'd-hope "We Can Dance Again"- make this an utterly essential artifact, and as good as anything released this year. --Thom Allott
