Less a band, more a terrorist cell: Love As Laughter might be at the end of a long line of rock insurrectionists, wielding feedback-groaning amps as their weapon against pop mediocrity, but as Destination 2000 shows, they certainly fight the battle well. Less a band, more a terrorist cell: Love As Laughter might be at the end of a long line of rock insurrectionists, wielding feedback-groaning amps as their weapon against pop mediocrity, but as Destination 2000 shows, they certainly fight the battle well. Led by veteran rock 'n' roller Sam Jayne, one-time Beck collaborator (he duetted with Beck on 94's One Foot In The Grave) and former front man for cult indie rockers Lync, LAL take up the battle where Royal Trux's Accelerator left off, updating no-wave punk attitude and the hip-shimmy of the honky-tonk rock'n'roll boogie to the digital age cutting-edge. Destination 2000--their third album, but the first for grunge-shedding Seattle indie SubPop--finds this one-time four-track solo project five strong, tinny lo-fi rock riffs beefed up into lip-curled rock 'n' roll, Exile On Main Street style. "Margaritas" is essentially the sound of Lou Reed fronting SonicYouth; a tanked-up "Statuette" staggers into acoustic blues territory; and "Stakes Avenue" is about as anthemic as a song can get, if it sounds like it was made in a freezing garage on amps held together with masking tape. It's rough, sure. But you can't deny, on Destination 2000, Love As Laughter sound ready for anything. --Louis Pattison
