Cultura does more than just place Breed 77 at the head of the long list of rock acts to hail from Gibraltar; it may actually raise this band to a whole new level. Like System of a Down or Sepultura, Breed 77 are hugely influenced by their cultural background--in their particular case, Middle Eastern and Spanish music (especially flamenco). The result is a fresh, new and exciting sound that's neither gimmicky nor trite. A lot of that is down to the skill of guitarists Pedro Caparros and Danny Felice, who can switch from deft finger plucking to head-banging thrash in the blink of an eye (as they do on "La Ultima Hora" and "Resurrection"), while Pete Chichone's drumming throughout is worthy of even Max Cavalera. Of course, some songs are more straightforward: "A Matter of Time" is pretty basic rock, while "The River" is a radio-friendly ballad worthy of bigger things. But Breed 77 are at their best when they're doing both things at once (as on "World's on Fire" and "Individuo"). Cultura is, quite simply, an outstanding rock album. --Robert Burrow
