If contemporary Hollywood sometimes seems an industry bent on recycling itself into oblivion, it still manages the occasional welcome genre-tweaking. Writer-director John Stockwell takes one of the last bastions of salty machismo, the surf film, and gives it a distinct surfer grrrl slant.
