Junip is the new band of Jose Gonzalez. For those of you coming in late, Jos‚ Gonz lez is a highly acclaimed singer/songwriter of Argentinean breed, but raised and based in the west coast metropolis of Gothenburg. His internationally acclaimed debut album, Veneer, has gone Gold many times over, and is a striking collection of hushed and autumnal indie pop bedroom songs that sits elegantly on the hi-fi end of the lo-fi spectrum. As is the case with Gonzalez distinctive solo songwriting, the trio Junip could be said to belong to "the quiet is the new loud" school, similar in vein to fine folks like Elliott Smith, Cat
As is the case with Gonzalez distinctive solo songwriting, the trio Junip could be said to belong to "the quiet is the new loud" school, similar in vein to fine folks like Elliott Smith, Cat Power and Hayden, but more compact, intense and lo-fi than Veneer. The intimacy is all present, and it feels so close, like Junip sits in the very same room as you do, singing, with mellow vocals reminiscent of Mark Kozelek in Red House Painters, accompanied by gentle but oversteered guitars. Black Refuge is the first 5-tracked EP acting taster to Junip's forthcoming album, ready to pierce your heart with it's immediate genuine honesty and intimate folky pop. It's a wind! Taking you through the Swedish woods, with scents of bark, sensitive guitars, pouring rain, the amazing vocals of Gonz lez, hypnotic Moog atmospheres by Tobias Winterkorn that sucks you in, and Elias Araya's careful drums that takes us home. Junip is a unique band, with depth and pop songs that will stick to your ears forever. Teme Shet. 2005.
