Here's a three-for-one deal of enormous quality, hailing from Herrmann's period just after moving to Los Angeles in the early 1950s. With his intimate, interiorised radio days largely behind him, the broader canvass (and budget) of the film world elicited some of his finest works in a short space of time. Here's a three-for-one deal of enormous quality, hailing from Herrmann's period just after moving to Los Angeles in the early 1950s. With his intimate, interiorised radio days largely behind him, the broader canvass (and budget) of the film world elicited some of his finest works in a short space of time. All of these scores are from within a three-year writing period, and it's easy to hear the composer's eagerness to be expansive with his new means. Garden of Evil (1954) was his first Western--Gary Cooper stranded in a turn of the century town. Unusually for Herrmann, there's plenty of pounding Indian percussion, and giddy-up horse-riding gallops. Prince of Players (1955) follows the lives of a family of theatre players. A full range of backdrop musical scenery from Herrmann paints a picture of troubles both on stage and behind. King of the Khyber Rifles (1953) actually came first, and pits Tyrone Powers against Aridi tribesmen. At the centre of plenty of dramatic action, Herrmann focuses our attention on a love story with a beautiful love motif. The mixing from the original masters results in only the occasional variation in sound quality. Otherwise this is classic Herrmann in a most generous presentation. --Paul Tonks
