Description:
Though the name of the band and the title of the album may briefly suggest otherwise, this record is not the work of the collective of intense if somewhat silly young Germans who spent part of the 1970s blowing things up for no readily apparent purpose. Though the name of the band and the title of the album may briefly suggest otherwise, this record is not the work of the collective of intense if somewhat silly young Germans who spent part of the 1970s blowing things up for no readily apparent purpose. Rather, it is a nom-de-plume adopted by Auteurs songwriter Luke Haines for this peculiar, contrary and altogether marvellous concept album about terrorism. The Baader Meinhof songs share the insidiously sweet melodies that characterise Haines' writing for The Auteurs, but they are shrouded here in baleful, malevolent electronica. Haines' lyrics are typically bilious, though there is an unarguable whimsical charm in his imagined musings on weapons drops in Jordan and night flights to Somalia. Exactly what Haines was thinking of remains a mystery--he may well have discerned a kindred spirit in the original Baader Meinhof gang's penchant for nihilistic destructiveness, though it is entirely possible that he just finds terrorism funny--but rock & roll had waited far too long for a couplet like "Do it for God, do it for Allah/Put your faith in Captain Muhmad and Al-Fatah". --Andrew Mueller
