Drifting hopelessly in the hinterland between crusty and metal kids, the music was actually quite a diverse bag--from the scratching and sampling of PWEI to the folky pop of the Stuffies, all it seemed to have in common was the fact that it was loved by stage-diving kids in shorts with long fringes and that most of the bands came from the Black Country. Cockney wannabes Carter USM soon came along to add a bit of southern sensibilty to proceedings, along with a healthy slice of political comment and wit. All the greats are on Anytime Anyplace Anywhere: "Sherrif Fatman", "Rubbish" and "Blood Sports For All", along with tracks from the twilight years of their career, such as "Let's Get Tattoos". There are some notable omissions--namely, their blistering cover version of the Pet Shop Boys' "Rent"--but this small gripe aside, Anytime Anyplace Anywhere is a worthy testament to Carter USM's musical legacy--suspiciously listener-friendly pop tunes with wonderfully acerbic lyrics. --Helen Marquis
