Alternately Deep

Fans may already be familiar with some of the tracks included here: the squelchy "No Love" (during which Smith dubs himself "the black George Clooney" and claims to have a "todger with luminous piss") first appeared on the flip of the "Too Cold" single, while Roots aficionados may recall that "Double Drat" and "Pep My Game" snuck out a couple of years back as exclusive downloads. Quality is generally high, however. A remix of "Check It" mines a seam of mutant dancehall that imagines a Jamaica where broad Cockney MCs rhyme "lovely" with "jubbly". And it's testament to Smith's unmistakable style and flair for the unusual that such a gumbo works, however, even when other wilful creative forces appear in the mix - see the eerie, hollowed-out remix of "Colossal Insight", courtesy of dreadlocked East London grime producer Jammer. --Louis Pattison
